Body Composition Assessment |
Professional ISAK skinfold assessment for a clearer view of change over time.
Body Composition
Body weight alone cannot show whether change has come from fat mass, muscle mass, fluid or normal day-to-day variation. That can make it a blunt and sometimes frustrating way to judge progress.
A standardised body composition assessment provides a more useful profile and, when repeated under consistent conditions, can help track changes that matter for sport, health and physique goals.
As an ISAK Level 1 accredited practitioner and Registered Dietitian, I provide restricted-profile anthropometry and skinfold assessment in Ponteland, Newcastle.
My role is to take precise, standardised measurements, explain what the results can and cannot tell you and place them in the context of your goals.
So you leave with useful information and practical direction – not simply a body-fat number without context.
Is this right for you?
You might benefit from a body composition assessment if you:
Want to track changes in skinfolds over time.
Are working towards a sport or performance goal.
Want more useful information than scale weight alone.
Are aiming to gain muscle or change body composition.
Would like a baseline before starting a training block.
Want repeat measurements at standardised intervals.
Are preparing for an event or competition.
Would value interpretation from a dietitian and sports nutritionist.
Understand that measurement is one tool rather than a complete picture of health or performance.

How I can help
Your assessment commonly includes:
- ISAK standardised restricted-profile measurements.
- Eight skinfold sites.
- Five girths.
- Two bone breadths.
- Body mass and stature.
- A sum of skinfolds to support reliable comparison over time.
- Clear explanation of results, limitations and meaningful change.
- Brief nutrition and training-context advice relevant to your goal.
- The option to repeat assessment under consistent conditions.
Who I work with
Body composition assessment may be useful for:
- Runners, cyclists and triathletes
- Strength and physique athletes
- Team sport athletes
- Active adults tracking health or training changes
- People pursuing muscle-gain goals
- Competitive and recreational athletes
- Coaches seeking standardised monitoring
- People who want an objective baseline
Assessment is always optional and should support, rather than dominate, decision-making. It may not be appropriate where measurements are likely to worsen body-image distress, disordered eating or an unhealthy focus on weight.
Why RJ Performance Nutrition?
ISAK provides an internationally recognised system for standardised anthropometric assessment. As a Level 1 practitioner, I carry out the restricted profile within the scope of that accreditation.
My dietetic and sports nutrition background means your results are interpreted alongside training, health and dietary context rather than treated as a stand-alone score.
You’ll receive measured, neutral feedback focused on trends and practical application. No single method measures body composition perfectly, and I will be clear about normal error, limitations and what constitutes meaningful change.
Frequently Asked Questions
What measurements are included?
The ISAK restricted profile includes stature, body mass, eight skinfolds, five girths and two bone breadths, completed using standardised landmarks and techniques.
Is this the same as a body-fat scan?
No. ISAK anthropometry directly measures skinfolds and other dimensions. Results can be tracked without relying on a single estimated body-fat percentage.
How often should I repeat the assessment?
For many goals, every six to eight weeks is enough to identify a meaningful trend. The most useful interval depends on your goal and expected rate of change.
How should I prepare?
You will receive preparation guidance. For useful comparison, repeat assessments should take place under similar conditions, including time of day, hydration and recent training.
Is body composition assessment suitable for everyone?
No. I may advise against it where measurement could reinforce disordered eating, significant body-image distress or an unhelpful focus on numbers.
How much does it cost?
A single assessment is £40. A block of three assessments is available for £100 when you want to monitor change over time.
